BASA awards come to Newtown
Minister Xingwana’s speech echoed Mhlope’s: the speaker used her inimitable expressive storytelling (mixed in with music pieces including an inspired version of ‘Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika’) to remind everyone gathered at the awards that “work well done is love made visible!” through the moving parable of Thandeka and Georgella.
Nominees and winners added to the night’s warmth and intimacy, with the 14 winners in 12 categories taking home unique Keiskamma project artworks, each one featuring an indigenous South African tree.
A special moment came when the Field Band Foundation and its sponsors were awarded the Chairman’s Premier Award. In presenting the award, Business and Arts South Africa chairman, Sikkie Kajee, quoted from the words of Judging Convener, Gordon Cooke, who said the Field Band Foundation was “deserving of the award because it highlights the collaboration of sponsors, which is a model we can all learn from. It’s also a wonderful example of contributing to society bottom up – a vital model for developing societies as we go forward”.
The awards were attended by a who’s who of the business and arts world including designer David Tlale, Ross Douglas of the Joburg Art Fair, John Perlman of Kaya FM, and Fred Withers, MD of Exclusive Books.Designed to bring South Africa's business and creative communities together, the Annual Business Day BASA Awards are presented in partnership with Anglo American and Business Day. The awards were inaugurated in 1997 as a way of recognising businesses and the projects they support and now count amongst South Africa’s most prestigious arts and culture awards.
