In 1939, the City Council approved the naming of the market square in Newtown as Mary Fitzgerald Square. But it was only in 1986 that the renaming took place with a plaque placed on the MuseuMAfricA building. This is a unique concept in the fostering of a dance culture and developing dance audiences in Joburg. Funded mainly by well-wishers, the Dance Factory has had successes in the establishment, equipping and administering of a dance centre through classes, workshops and performances, and in particular to the communities that have been culturally, educationally and economically disadvantaged.
